Continuing our vintage centerpieces series, today we’ll look at ideas for a vintage garden themed wedding. To me, a vintage garden wedding would have your tradition flowers, birds, butterflies and/or dragonflies to whatever extent you want. The “vintage” comes into play by re-purposing vintage items to use in your theme. It’s like shabby chic, I guess. Whites, pastels, floral prints, flowers and more can define a vintage garden wedding. Let’s take a look at some ideas for vintage centerpieces for a garden wedding.
Garden Elements for Your Centerpieces
“Garden” is the keyword here. You can’t have a garden wedding without florals. However, you can shuck the traditional vase or container and come up with something more vintage in feel. Or, make the arrangements smaller and add other vintage items to create a unique tablescape for your centerpiece.
Think wooden boxes, garden caddies, watering cans, birdbaths, chippy garden urns, white washed baskets, birdcages and unique planters with cherubs, birds or butterflies to use as your containers.
In addition to the flowers/plants, mix in some other garden elements to create a vignette on each table. Rememeber, don’t go overboard. There still needs to be room for the utilitarian items like salt and pepper, dishware, glassware, flatware, condiments, etc… Use odd numbers of items like 3 or 5. One should have some height to draw the eye up while the others can be lower (not all the same height). Use risers to create different heights if needed
Items to add as risers and to create a vintage garden theme could include:
- vintage gardening tools
- garden statuary
- metal plant stands
- floral themed or solid pastel colored cake plates
- new garden gloves (drape over the corner of a garden caddy or planter)
- garden sticks with table numbers inside potted plants
- mini chalkboard garden labels as table name/number holder
- votive candles
Use your imagination. Visit your local thrift store, vintage booth, flea market, etsy.com or eBay. These are all great sources for vintage items with good prices and selections. No two vintage garden centerpieces will be alike if you hunt down your own decor! I’ll leave you with a few photos to get you inspired!
